Vietnam’s VNREDSat-1 satellite program has significantly bolstered the collaboration between Vietnam and France in the realm of space technology, paving the way for advancements in next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and enhanced domestic capabilities. Launched on May 7, 2013, the VNREDSat-1 marked Vietnam’s entry into Earth observation from space and has impressively extended its operational life well beyond its initial five-year design, still functioning in 2026, its 14th year of service.
This program transcended mere satellite operation, fostering the development of Vietnamese expertise in the field. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training sessions in both France and Vietnam, focusing on system design, satellite operations, and problem-solving. This training empowered them to independently address technical challenges, signifying a transition from reliance on transferred procedures to crafting their solutions.
In addition to human resource development, Vietnam established a comprehensive remote-sensing system that manages imaging requests, satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. From 2020 onward, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images, supporting activities in environmental and natural-resource management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense and security.
According to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the program has laid a crucial technical and human-resource groundwork for upcoming satellite projects. However, he highlighted the necessity for Vietnam to further advance its technological self-reliance in areas such as satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems.
A new chapter of cooperation unfolded during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025, when a declaration of intent for long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation was signed by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies. This partnership aims to develop a next-generation Earth observation system and explore technological possibilities for a prospective VNREDSat-2. Future collaborative efforts will emphasize Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications, ultimately enabling Vietnam to progress from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing and mastering satellite technology.
