Thailand has voiced its concerns to China regarding the recent shipment of military tanks to Cambodia, fearing it might destabilize the delicate ceasefire established with Cambodia after last year’s violent border skirmishes. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul addressed the matter with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a meeting last week, as confirmed by Thailand’s foreign ministry. Officials expressed worries that the delivery’s timing could strain the already tense relationship between Thailand and Cambodia, despite ongoing ceasefire agreements.
The military shipment involved 39 Chinese-made T-59D battle tanks, sent to Cambodia under an existing military cooperation agreement. Thai authorities noted that there is no evidence the tanks have been placed near the border. The relationship between Thailand and Cambodia has been fraught since last year’s deadly clashes along their shared boundary, with unresolved disputes over land and maritime borders rooted in historical treaties continuing to challenge diplomatic negotiations.
China has stated that its defense partnerships with both Thailand and Cambodia are standard and not aimed at any third party. Earlier this year, China also delivered a Type 056 guided-missile corvette to Cambodia. Thai officials acknowledged China’s neutral approach and appreciated Beijing’s efforts to mediate tensions. However, they emphasized that the resolution of the dispute relies on direct dialogue between Thailand and Cambodia.
Beyond the immediate border concerns, Thailand and China have agreed to launch a new dialogue mechanism that will involve their foreign and defense ministers. The inaugural round of discussions is expected to prioritize addressing cross-border scam operations, showcasing a shared commitment to broader regional security issues.
