Vietnam and Switzerland have committed to enhancing their Comprehensive Partnership through new initiatives in trade, investment, scientific research, and technology. This development follows Swiss President Guy Parmelin’s official visit to Vietnam, marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. The discussions emphasized expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including digital finance and sustainable development.
A significant outcome of the visit was the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), of which Switzerland is a member. This agreement aims to enhance market access, support business expansion, and foster stronger trade and investment ties once it takes effect. Both countries expressed a desire to increase bilateral trade, which surpassed $1 billion in 2025, and to promote greater Swiss investment in Vietnam, particularly in sectors such as green finance, digital technology, infrastructure, sustainable tourism, and workforce development.
The leaders reaffirmed the importance of strengthening political dialogue and economic ties and fostering collaboration through international institutions. They also discussed expanding exchanges among government agencies, businesses, universities, and research organizations. Opportunities for joint research and technology transfer in fields like biomedicine, renewable energy, agriculture, and the digital economy were identified, with cooperation expected to support innovation and the commercial application of research.
Vietnam plans to boost educational partnerships and exchanges, leveraging Switzerland’s expertise in education and scientific research. This initiative aims to involve experts, researchers, and students, thereby enriching Vietnam’s educational landscape.
Both nations reiterated their commitment to sustainable development, free trade, multilateral cooperation, and a rules-based international order. They expressed confidence that closer collaboration would not only support economic growth but also contribute to regional and global stability.
