Vietnam has underscored its expanding influence in strengthening cooperation between ASEAN and Russia, following the recent ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit that celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. The summit demonstrated Vietnam’s pivotal role, as Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung noted the country’s significant contributions to the event’s success. These efforts were instrumental in promoting ASEAN’s central role and supporting the bloc’s strategic partnership with Russia.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, the Vietnamese delegation advocated for increased dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful dispute resolution, all while emphasizing the importance of adherence to international law. Vietnam proposed broadening collaboration across several key sectors, including energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These proposals are part of a broader strategy to enhance ASEAN-Russia relations through 2030, with energy identified as a major focus of their partnership.
At the summit, new frameworks were adopted to bolster ASEAN-Russia cooperation, with Vietnam announcing plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This initiative reflects Vietnam’s dedication to nurturing future regional cooperation and underscores its commitment to fostering long-term, strategic partnerships within the region.
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, focusing on expanding collaboration in areas such as energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport. These discussions are indicative of the ongoing efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
Vietnam expressed optimism that the outcomes of the summit would contribute to strengthening ASEAN–Russia relations, enhancing regional stability, and opening new avenues for economic growth and cooperation across Eurasia. By reinforcing these strategic partnerships, Vietnam aims to play a crucial role in shaping the future dynamics of the region, ensuring a stable and prosperous environment for all involved.
