Thailand and Vietnam have elevated their diplomatic ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, a milestone that coincides with the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. This enhancement signals a robust commitment to bolster political, economic, and technological cooperation between the two Southeast Asian nations.
The upgrade in relations was formalized during an official visit by Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary Tô Lâm to Thailand. During this visit, the two countries inked four critical agreements that span economic cooperation, science and technology, education, and aviation development, setting the groundwork for future collaboration.
A significant outcome of the visit was the adoption of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan for the years 2026 to 2031. This plan outlines a framework for expanding cooperation across various sectors, including security and defense, where both nations agreed to join forces against transnational crimes such as online scams and illegal fishing. The leaders also committed to strengthening economic ties to better navigate global economic challenges and stimulate private-sector growth.
In a bid to increase bilateral trade, which currently stands at approximately $22.1 billion, both countries have set a new target of $24 billion. Technology and innovation have been identified as strategic areas for deeper collaboration, with specific focus on satellite technology, semiconductors, agricultural biotechnology, and other emerging industries. Additionally, they aim to enhance supply-chain integration, local economic connectivity, and green energy cooperation, all of which are seen as vital for boosting regional competitiveness and energy security.
President Tô Lâm emphasized Vietnam’s dedication to nurturing its relationship with Thailand, underlining a shared commitment to promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development across Southeast Asia. This strengthened partnership is expected to have a significant impact on the region, driving forward collective goals and mutual interests.
