Singapore and Thailand Deepen Relations Before ASEAN Leadership Terms

by admin477351

Singapore and Thailand are set to strengthen their bilateral and regional partnerships as they gear up for their consecutive roles as ASEAN chair, with Singapore assuming the position in 2027 followed by Thailand in 2028. This commitment was solidified during the recent Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat in Bangkok on September 2, marking the first such meeting between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The leaders emphasized the robust nature of their bilateral relations and agreed to implement a multi-year agenda to ensure continuity throughout their ASEAN chairmanships.

The discussions emphasized expanding cooperation in several key areas, including artificial intelligence, the digital and green economies, energy resilience, food security, connectivity, and defense and security, as well as efforts to combat transnational crime. Both nations reaffirmed their support for a rules-based international order and a more integrated ASEAN region. Energy cooperation was a focal point, with both leaders backing the ASEAN Power Grid and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project, which facilitates Singapore’s importation of renewable hydropower from Laos via Thailand and Malaysia.

In addition to energy cooperation, the two countries took significant steps in social sector development. They witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding aimed at advancing knowledge exchange and research on social welfare policies, alongside fostering collaboration between relevant institutions. This reflects a shared commitment to enhance social sector ties and promote sustainable development.

Economic relations between Singapore and Thailand continue to thrive, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$52.4 billion in 2025. Singapore has maintained its position as Thailand’s largest source of foreign direct investment for three years running, underscoring the deep economic connections between the two nations. This economic foundation provides a strong platform for the proposed multi-year cooperation agenda and the anticipated benefits of their consecutive ASEAN chairmanships.
