Thailand Halts 60-Day Visa Waiver for Indian Tourists: Key Details

Thailand is set to tighten its visa policies by ending the temporary 60-day visa-free entry that has been in place for travelers from various countries, including India. This shift marks a return to more stringent entry requirements, potentially altering how Indian tourists plan their vacations to this popular Asian destination. Under the new rules approved by Thai authorities, Indian tourists will need to either obtain a Visa on Arrival (VoA) or apply for an e-Visa prior to their trip.

The Visa on Arrival option permits Indian travelers to remain in Thailand for up to 15 days per entry, a significant reduction from the 60 days previously allowed. Those looking to avoid the hassle of airport queues can opt for the e-Visa by applying through Thailand’s official online system before departure. Experts in the tourism industry suggest that these changes could lead to a decline in spontaneous travel and last-minute bookings due to the additional paperwork and costs involved. Nonetheless, Thailand is anticipated to continue being an appealing destination for Indian visitors, thanks to its affordability, diverse attractions, convenient flight options, and renowned hospitality.

The updated visa regulations are expected to particularly impact long-term visitors, digital nomads, and those planning extended multi-city trips. Travelers who prefer longer and more flexible stays might now consider alternative Southeast Asian destinations with more lenient entry requirements. As per Thai officials, the new rules will come into force 15 days after their publication in the Royal Gazette. Travelers entering Thailand before the implementation of these changes will be able to stay under the previous regulations until their allowed period expires.

Thailand originally introduced the expanded visa-free access in 2024 to boost tourism and stimulate economic recovery post-pandemic. This policy was successful in increasing tourist arrivals, reinforcing Thailand’s status as a favored destination for leisure travel, family holidays, and special events. The government’s decision to revert to stricter entry measures is reportedly driven by concerns over visa overstays, unauthorized business activities, and the necessity for enhanced immigration oversight. The revised framework aims to balance tourism growth with effective border management and regulatory control.

Travelers planning a trip to Thailand are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the latest visa requirements and entry conditions before making travel arrangements to ensure a hassle-free experience. By staying informed, visitors can better prepare for the changes and continue to enjoy all that Thailand has to offer.
