Vietnam has urged for enhanced collaboration between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United States, focusing on trade, artificial intelligence, digital technology, and energy transition. This call came during the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with the US, which took place in Manila. Vietnamese Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung emphasized the necessity of finalizing a new comprehensive work program between the two sides, highlighting Washington’s commitment to peace, stability, and development in the region.
In his address, Minister Trung proposed expanding cooperation in pivotal sectors such as trade and investment, the digital economy, semiconductors, and science and technology. He also highlighted the significance of innovation, energy transition, and regional energy connectivity. Furthermore, Trung sought continued US support for the Mekong sub-region, particularly in areas like water management, climate change adaptation, infrastructure development, and workforce training.
On the topic of regional security, Trung stressed the importance of maintaining peace and resolving disputes through dialogue and adherence to international law. He expressed appreciation for US support of ASEAN’s stance on the South China Sea and encouraged Washington to bolster an open, inclusive, and rules-based regional order centered around ASEAN. Additionally, regarding developments in the Middle East, Trung advocated for more dialogue and the restoration of safe maritime routes through the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring the necessity of protecting freedom of navigation under international law.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated Washington’s support for ASEAN, identifying Southeast Asia as a region of significant strategic and economic importance. He committed to sustaining US investment in supply chains, the digital economy, energy security, power-grid connectivity, and civil nuclear cooperation. Rubio’s remarks underscored the mutual interest in strengthening economic ties and expanding cooperation in high-value industries.
The conference concluded with ASEAN and the United States agreeing to deepen economic connections, enhance people-to-people exchanges, and improve coordination in addressing challenges such as terrorism, cybercrime, human trafficking, drug trafficking, and online scams. This agreement reflects a shared commitment to tackling these global issues while fostering a stronger partnership between ASEAN and the US.
