Disney’s new live-action adaptation of Moana offers a fresh take on the cherished animated classic by portraying its lead character as a fearless warrior instead of a traditional princess. The film aims to resonate with a contemporary audience by emphasizing themes of courage, compassion, and cultural identity.
Dwayne Johnson returns to his role as the demigod Maui, a character he originally brought to life in the 2016 animated version of the film. Johnson, who also serves as a producer for the live-action film, emphasized Moana’s characterization as “not a princess, but a warrior,” highlighting the film’s universal themes of community, self-discovery, and Polynesian culture that appeal to viewers across all age groups.
The adaptation introduces Catherine Lagaʻaia, a 19-year-old Australian actor with Samoan roots, as the titular character. Her selection came after an extensive audition process with over 32,000 contenders vying for the role. Catherine shared that embodying Moana allowed her to experience personal growth, inspired by the character’s compassion and empathy—qualities that drive Moana to choose understanding over anger even in challenging times.
This new version of Moana places a strong emphasis on resilience, empathy, and authenticity, aiming to connect with Generation Alpha while remaining faithful to the essence of the original story. Through its modern lens, the film seeks to inspire a new generation while honoring the spirit of the classic tale.
Moana was released in India on July 10, available in both English and Hindi, bringing its vibrant and empowering message to an international audience.
