European leaders are convening in Kyiv to address Ukraine’s urgent need for air-defense systems amid escalating Russian missile strikes on Ukrainian cities. This gathering, known as the Coalition of the Willing, is being spearheaded by Britain, France, and Germany, with several other European leaders participating remotely. Also present is EU Council President Antonio Costa, highlighting the significance of these talks.
The intensifying Russian missile attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and damage to residential areas, prompting Ukraine to consistently urge its allies for more air-defense systems and interceptor missiles. In response, Britain is anticipated to express its support for Ukraine, while France plans to facilitate local production of the long-range SCALP missile. Additionally, France has committed to supplying more interceptor missiles to bolster Ukraine’s defenses.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has highlighted a notable decline in the delivery of Patriot interceptor missiles. Ukraine received 675 such missiles in 2023, a number that is expected to decrease to 364 in 2025, with projections for 2026 indicating a further drop to 264. Kyiv is aiming to secure at least 300 interceptors before the onset of winter, underscoring the critical need for these defense systems.
As Ukraine remains heavily reliant on advanced Western air-defense systems to counteract Russian ballistic missiles, which are notoriously difficult to intercept, European allies are exploring strategies to augment their supplies. This effort is part of a broader strategy to maintain pressure on Moscow while ensuring the protection of Ukrainian civilians.
