Vietnam and Laos have reaffirmed their commitment to their 2026 cooperation plan by agreeing to enhance collaboration in key sectors such as investment, trade, infrastructure, energy, and human resource development. During a mid-year meeting held in Da Nang, officials from both nations evaluated the strides made in the first eight months of the year and set priorities for the remainder of 2026.

The economic ties between the two countries have continued to grow, as evidenced by Vietnamese businesses initiating 20 new investment projects in Laos, totaling $638.3 million, in just the first seven months of the year. This trend underscores Laos’s position as Vietnam’s largest overseas investment destination, with about 300 Vietnamese-backed projects valued at over $7 billion.

In terms of trade, bilateral exchanges reached around $1.3 billion during the first half of 2026. Both countries are also making headway in other areas of cooperation, including energy, transport, construction, and infrastructure connectivity, reflecting a robust partnership that extends beyond just economic exchanges.

Education and the development of human resources remain pivotal in the cooperation framework. For 2026, Vietnam has committed to offering 1,300 scholarships to Lao students and has earmarked $43 million in aid to Laos. This aid is part of a broader assistance program running from 2026 to 2030, aiming to bolster educational ties and capacity building.

To ensure the effective implementation of their cooperation plan, Vietnam and Laos have agreed to enhance coordination on major projects, address investment challenges, and strengthen economic links within the Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia region. This strategic focus is intended to foster deeper regional integration and mutual growth.
