by admin477351

Vietnam and Norway have committed to strengthening their bilateral cooperation in key areas such as trade, renewable energy, and maritime development as the two nations prepare to mark 55 years of diplomatic relations in 2026. This commitment was underscored during a meeting in Hanoi between Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Norwegian State Secretary Astrid Bergmål, where both sides emphasized the importance of expanding economic and diplomatic ties.

A significant outcome of the meeting was the focus on the Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states. Deputy Foreign Minister Hang welcomed the conclusion of negotiations, which took 14 years, and urged for the swift completion of ratification procedures to facilitate implementation. This agreement is anticipated to enhance market access, foster business partnerships, and provide greater certainty for investors.

The discussions also highlighted the Green Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and Norway, which was signed in April, as a crucial framework for promoting sustainable development and the transition to cleaner energy sources. Vietnam is keen on attracting Norwegian investment in sectors such as renewable energy, maritime transport, shipbuilding, and high-tech aquaculture. Meanwhile, Norway expressed its interest in expanding cooperation in marine management, sustainable aquaculture, green shipping, and the circular economy.

Both countries recognized the importance of regional cooperation and agreed to work more closely within the ASEAN-Norway partnership for 2026–2030. Their collaboration will center on areas such as the blue economy, energy transition, connectivity, innovation, and sustainable development. Additionally, Vietnam and Norway pledged to enhance coordination between their foreign ministries and support each other in regional and international forums, including the United Nations.

The meeting underscored a shared commitment to advancing sustainable development, strengthening diplomatic relations, and expanding economic opportunities. Both nations reaffirmed the importance of adhering to principles of free trade, international law, and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
